AK Enterprises Designs a Tactile Contemporary Workspace in Kolkata

When a textile company wanted an office that reflected its roots without being on the nose about it, they turned to AK Enterprises.

The result is a 5,000 sq. ft. Kolkata workspace that trades corporate cliché for material honesty, tactile warmth, and quiet confidence.

Not every office needs to announce itself. The Kolkata workspace designed by AK Enterprises- an interior design and execution firm with nearly two decades of experience- makes its statement through restraint, craft, and a deeply considered material language. Designed by interior designers Amit Maitra and Kallol Baroi for a cotton company, the brief was precise: keep it contemporary, functional, and warm, without tipping into decoration.

The concept, as Amit explains,” grew directly from the client’s core material. ‘The concept revolves around material honesty and tactile layering. Cotton, as a material, is soft, natural, and understated. We translated that into the space through finishes that feel real- micro-concrete, textured walls, wood veneers- paired with controlled metal frameworks for structure. The idea was to create a workspace that feels grounded yet contemporary, where every material ages well and adds character over time.’ That philosophy runs through every corner of this approximately 5,000 sq. ft. mid-to-large scale corporate floor plate.” Quotation marks are missing.

The reception sets the tone immediately. A sculptural, monolithic desk finished in micro-concrete anchors the arrival experience- its curved form softening the geometry while hand-applied texture introduces an organic, raw quality. A black slatted ceiling with integrated linear lighting sits above, adding precision and creating a balance between softness and structure. The workstation areas are kept open and efficient, with neutral desks paired with subtle green fabric panels that bring in a hint of colour without overwhelming the palette.

As one moves deeper into the office, the material story evolves. Muted, textured wall finishes- cement-based and understated- add depth without distraction. Glass partitions framed in clean metal define spaces while maintaining visual openness. Wood veneers play a crucial role in adding warmth across cabins and meeting rooms, bringing a refined richness that complements the restrained base. The director’s cabin uses fluted detailing, polished surfaces, and curated art to achieve a composed, slightly richer character. Conference spaces are more controlled, with veneer panelling, integrated storage, and clean lighting setups that encourage focus.

Art is integrated into the design as part of the spatial composition rather than mere decoration- carefully placed installations and framed pieces introduce moments of pause. As Amit concludes, ‘Furniture follows suit, understated yet intentional, with the director’s cabin offering a more pronounced material expression.’ The overall design emphasises material honesty, creating a space that reveals its character gradually and endures over time- a Kolkata office interior that gets better the longer you’re in it.
