Drawing inspiration from old-world Europe, Studio Kaleidospace has designed Arch & Ivy, a Chennai restro-bar that blends grand arches, bespoke craftsmanship, and warm materiality into an atmosphere of timeless elegance.
Chennai-based design firm Studio Kaleidospace proudly presents their latest interior project, Arch & Ivy, a 1,500-sq. ft. restro-bar that reimagines the romance of classical European architecture through a contemporary hospitality lens. Designed as an immersive destination where heritage-inspired craftsmanship meets modern social culture, the project transforms a blank shell into a richly layered environment defined by architectural drama, bespoke detailing, and timeless elegance.
Stepping into this restro-bar in Chennai is akin to crossing a threshold into a bygone era, where classical European architecture gently collides with the moody atmosphere of an old-school speakeasy. The entire layout is anchored by a rhythmic series of monumental, romantic semi-circular arches. These grand architectural elements were entirely fabricated on-site to break up the empty shell, introducing immediate structural depth and historical weight to the envelope.
Each archway rises from builtin grooved pillars topped with highly detailed, hand-carved tops featuring classic leaf patterns. To highlight their grand shape, a decorative patterned trim frames the upper walls, while a textured, sand-blasted plaster finish covers the surfaces, giving the walls an authentic, stone-carved look.
The tactile journey continues overhead and underfoot, establishing a sophisticated material warmth. The ceiling is lined with linear tongue-andgroove hardwood planks, finished in a rich, satin-lacquered walnut that beautifully softens the room’s acoustics and reflects the amber light glowing throughout the room. Below, a dual-level flooring system elegantly defines the spatial transitions.
Deep, wide-plank resilient wooden flooring runs through the high-traffic avenues, seamlessly shifting into a masterfully laid parquet wood-block pattern upon ascending the steps into the intimate lounge alcoves. Underneath the main arches, handpainted scenic wall murals depicting classical gardens are framed by plaster rosette borders, drawing the eye deep into the walls and making the entire space feel endless.
The true masterstroke of the design unfolds at the main bar counter, which serves as a vivid, maximalist anchor for the room. The bar’s apron is clad in high-polished, hand-painted blue paint, its electric veins intensely lit from within to create a striking contrast against the surrounding earthy tones. Framing the back bar is a massive site-built arch that holds a custom-printed, high-tensile stretched canvas mural depicting an ethereal Renaissance sky. Overlaid cleanly onto this historic artwork is a bespoke black iron trellis structure that serves as a highly functional, floating bottle rack, striking a perfect balance between industrial utility and fine art.
Every piece of furniture in the resto-bar was custom-fabricated to elevate the spatial story. Guests are pulled toward a collection of mid-century-inspired accent armchairs upholstered in a striking crimson-red velvet, supported by minimalist black powder-coated steel frames. These vibrant pieces sit alongside low-slung, deeply cushioned lounge sofas in a distressed taupe that nestle comfortably within the window bays.
Nearby, custom high-top tables feature heavy wooden legs shaped like old barrels, while a commanding DJ console features a dark black finish wrapped in tight vertical wood ridges.
Adding an extra layer of old-world charm to the seating areas is a stunning geometric stained-glass installation built right into the wall arches behind the sofas. The colourful glass inserts feature beautiful fan patterns bordered in deep reds and blues, catching the light and creating a private, glowing backdrop.
Bringing this entire narrative to life is an intimate, lowfrequency lighting scheme. Multi-tiered, antique brass and cast-iron chandeliers hang from the timber ceilings, casting a glittering glow through their crystal pendants. The final result is a seamless, deeply detailed design where every handcrafted moulding, rich material, and customized furniture piece tells the story of old-world luxury brought to life in the heart of Chennai.
