Designed by UnBox Designs, House by the Park is a light-filled, interconnected home in Delhi’s Defence Colony that blends contemporary design with warm materiality, it balances privacy, togetherness, and a seamless connection to nature.
Designed by UnBox Designs, House by the Park challenges the conventions of the urban builder-floor. Nestled in Delhi’s Defence Colony, the residence unfolds as a singular, interconnected home where architecture weaves together everyday life, cherished memories, and fluid movement, creating spaces that feel both timeless and deeply personal.
What emerges is more than a structure; ,it is a thoughtful balance between architectural intent and everyday living. The brief was simple yet deeply meaningful: to rebuild not just a house, but a way of life. The family envisioned a home that was contemporary and efficient while remaining warm, rooted, and deeply personal. For Aman Issar, Principal Architect at UnBox Designs, the goal was never to create another expression of luxury, but to design a home that nurtures togetherness while respecting the individuality of every family member. Working alongside Swarima Agarwal, this vision was translated into a home that is both refined and deeply lived-in.
The architecture unfolds as a carefully composed vertical arrangement. Two independent residences occupy the lower levels, while a duplex crowns the building, creating a private retreat for a family of four. Rather than a response to spatial constraints alone, the configuration establishes a delicate balance between shared living and personal privacy, allowing connection without compromising independence.
Despite its layered organisation, the home feels remarkably open and airy. Floor-to-ceiling glazing framed in slender aluminium sections invites abundant natural light indoors while maintaining a constant visual dialogue with the adjoining park. The landscape becomes an extension of the home, with shifting light, tree canopies, and seasonal changes enriching the interiors throughout the day.
The spatial experience unfolds with equal sensitivity. Open-plan living and dining spaces overlook the park, encouraging family interaction and entertaining, while the more private areas offer calm, intimate retreats. The transitions between spaces feel effortless, creating a home that responds naturally to different rhythms of daily life.
Materiality lends the residence both character and permanence. Stonecrete walls introduce texture and depth, while exposed concrete ceilings—cast against timber shuttering—celebrate the honesty of construction. Polished marble flooring brings understated elegance, complemented by the warm tones of Jaisalmer stone, which glows softly as daylight filters through the house. Together, these materials create an environment that feels timeless, tactile, and enduring.
At the heart of the home, a freestanding staircase becomes both a functional and sculptural focal point. Positioned beneath a skylight, it draws natural light deep into the interior, transforming circulation into an uplifting spatial experience. Running alongside it is a hand-painted Tree of Life mural, a subtle artistic intervention that symbolises growth, continuity, and the evolving story of the family.
The interiors remain intentionally understated, allowing art, craftsmanship, and personal collections to define the character of the home. Curated artworks engage in quiet conversation with the architecture, while bespoke furniture created in collaboration with Mangrove Collective and Portside Café introduces warmth, texture, and a sense of familiarity.
Ultimately, House by the Park is shaped through collaboration. It reflects an ongoing dialogue between architect and client, between material and landscape, and between aspiration and everyday life. Rather than presenting itself as a finished statement, the home embraces change, evolving alongside the family that inhabits it.
House by the Park does not rely on dramatic gestures to make an impression. Instead, it reveals itself gradually, through changing light, honest materials, and spaces that gracefully accommodate both shared moments and quiet reflection.
At its heart, it is a home defined by connected living, rooted in memory, shaped by collaboration, and designed to grow with the lives unfolding within it.
