Asian Paints, in collaboration with St+art Foundation and XXL Collective, has unveiled two public art initiatives in Srinagar that celebrate Kashmir’s cultural heritage and artistic traditions. The initiatives include Aks-e-Kashmir, which transforms 40 iconic shikaras on Dal Lake into floating works of art, and the Kashmir chapter of Donate A Wall, marking the tenth anniversary of the public art initiative with a large-scale mural at the University of Kashmir.
Through Aks-e-Kashmir, the traditional shikara has been reinterpreted as a canvas for contemporary storytelling. Four artists—Owais Ahmed, Sheehij Kaul, Zahra Javed and Shweta Sharma—have created distinct artworks inspired by different facets of Kashmir’s cultural identity.
The shikaras combine painted surfaces, handcrafted wooden canopies and curated upholstery to create immersive visual experiences. Asian Paints products, including Royale Glitz, Apcolite Premium Enamel, Wood Finish, Ador and Pure Royale, have been used across the boats, with the material palette intended to complement the region’s changing light, landscapes and traditional craftsmanship.
The initiative extends Asian Paints’ association with Kashmir, following earlier projects including the Aks-e-Kashmir Shade Guide and a special-edition Apex Ultima Kashmir Pack, both inspired by the region’s colours, textures and architectural character.
Alongside the shikara installation, the Kashmir edition of Donate A Wall has transformed the façade of the University of Kashmir’s Allama Iqbal Library Building with an 11,500 sq. ft. mural. Created in collaboration with St+art Foundation and the University of Kashmir, the artwork was conceptualised by Srinagar-based architect, artist and urban planner Zoya Kashmiri and executed by local artists.
Drawing from the university’s motto, “तमसोमाज्योतिर्गमय” (From Darkness to Light), the mural explores themes of knowledge, imagination and cultural memory. It has been executed using Asian Paints Apex Ultima Protek, selected for its durability in changing weather conditions.
The University of Kashmir joins the growing Donate A Wall network, which has transformed 24 public spaces across 18 cities over the past decade, positioning public art as a medium for cultural expression and community engagement.
