For over four decades, the Traditional Handicrafts Centre (THC) has been a custodian of India’s artisanal heritage, taking the craftsmanship of Jodhpur’s master woodworkers to collectors and connoisseurs across the world. The brand is now all set to starts a new chapter with Nayab, a 1,300-sq-ft store in the Raghuvanshi Mills Compound, Lower Parel, Mumbai. More than a retail space, Nayab is conceived as an intimate gallery where India’s rarest heirlooms and antique masterpieces find contemporary resonance. With its main-road frontage and modern-heritage inspired design, the store becomes a bridge between the centuries-old craft traditions of the hinterland and the cosmopolitan energy of Mumbai. Stepping into Nayab, visitors encounter carefully sourced artefacts, furniture, and objects that carry with them the patina of history. The store, designed by Vrinda—also an interior designer—is imagined as a spatial journey, where visitors move through zones dedicated to Uraib, a fashion label by Palak Gupta, and Cahree, a mindful living brand by Tanushree Agarwal—both sister-in-laws of Vrinda— before venturing deeper into galleries of curated artefacts. Inside the gallery, THC’s collection of chests, cabinets, sculptures, antiques and furniture pieces, unfold. The flooring and wall panels across the store are done by Reclaimed Flooring Center, a subsidiary to THC, known for sourcing teak wood from century-old colonial buildings, and breathing new life into forgotten materials, thereby reducing deforestation and the demand for plantation timber. Within this mix of heritage and contemporary setting, THC’s treasures are given space to breathe and be reinterpreted, making the store as much a cultural experience as a retail one.
