Casa Lumiere by The KariGhars unfolds as a carefully curated exploration of classical grace and contemporary urban living.
Casa Lumiere designed by The KariGhars is a residence that unfolds as a dialogue between classic grace and contemporary clarity, creating a home shaped as much by emotion as by spatial logic. Located in Hennur, Bengaluru, the family’s brief carried a duality at its core: the parents sought a Vastu-aligned, timelessly elegant home, while the children imagined clean, modern spaces with fluid functionality. Rather than choosing one design language over the other, the design team envisioned the project as “The Harmony of Two Worlds,” crafting spaces where both sensibilities quietly coexist.

Sharing the planning and design brief, Aastha Chadha, Co-Founder, The KariGhars, says, ‘Spread across 3,200 sq. ft., the planning began by understanding the family’s rhythms, needs, and relationship with the site. The terrace, blessed with open skies, naturally evolved into a two-mood deck: one half designed for gatherings with a bar and glowing pergolas, and the other shaped as a tranquil retreat with a private jacuzzi corner. The living room, once compact and shaded, was extended into the original portico, its floor and ceiling lines carried outward to merge indoor ease with outdoor openness. Large glass panels pull light and greenery into the space, transforming it into an airy, alfresco-inspired lounge.’ Design execution credits for the project are attributed to Shalini Mandal, who was part of the core team.
Vastu requirements guided several decisions but were resolved with subtle, thoughtful design. The safe in the master bedroom was integrated into an elegant tall unit that doubles as a side table, maintaining visual calm. The absence of a designated Puja room led to an elegant intervention. Converting a corner of the garage into a serene, marble-and-Corian-backed Puja space aligned perfectly with Vastu and sits harmoniously opposite the dining area.

When this addition compromised natural light in the kitchen, a second window was introduced, restoring ventilation and brightness. The kitchen was then expanded with a clearer layout, utility niche, and island counter that anchors family interactions.
Each bedroom carries its own narrative. The daughter’s room, which is part sanctuary, part fashion-design atelier, balances muted tones for rest with a dedicated workspace featuring an island workstation, mannequin zone, and cosy sit-out. “The son’s room, reoriented to comply with Vastu, incorporates a subtle partition and a compact walkin enhanced by a skylight, bringing light and order into the space”, informs Aashita. Across the home, the material palette reinforces the central theme: wainscoting, warm wallpapers, and wood grains introduce classic comfort, while fluted glass, metal trims, and seamless surfaces add contemporary clarity. Marble, Corian, textured tiles, and weather-treated woods are applied with intention, each surface chosen for the emotional quality it lends: grounding, uplifting, meditative, or celebratory. Challenges became catalysts for transformation: the missing Puja room inspired a reclaimed spiritual nook; reduced kitchen lighting encouraged a brighter, more efficient layout; varying aesthetic preferences led to a hybrid language where traditional warmth and modern precision blend with confidence; a tight living room became a sunlit extension; and compact bedrooms were re-planned to support purpose without increasing footprint. “The result is a home that feels deeply personal, intuitive, and intentionally crafted, where every corner mirrors the lifestyle, values, and aspirations of the family who lives within it”, concludes Aashita.
