In the heart of Aluva-Kochi lies a tale of reminiscence and restoration, woven meticulously by studio TAB, helmed by Principal Architects Rahul Das Menon and Ojas Chaudhari. “Anusmaranam – The Reminiscence” stands as a testament to the architectural firm’s dedication to preserving heritage while infusing contemporary elements, breathing life into a century-old ancestral property ravaged by the 2018 Kerala floods.
The journey embarked upon by studio TAB wasn’t merely about reviving a home; it was a narrative curated to bridge the chasm between the past and present. The architects undertook a four-month-long endeavor, delving into the local craftsmanship and materials, ambling through the ancient Mattancherry market’s alleys, and sourcing relics of woodwork from dilapidated houses. This concerted effort was pivotal in resurrecting the essence of the ancestral home, a place steeped in memories spanning four generations.
Adding insight on the design process Ojas Chaudhari said, “At its core, “Anusmaranam” is a symphony of past narratives interwoven with modern design elements. Salvaged teak from the old roof finds new life as resplendent ceiling planks, while a fallen mango tree, once a victim of calamity, metamorphoses into bespoke seating and a basin pedestal. Each refurbished element, from handmade tiles to heirloom furniture, finds its place harmoniously amid contemporary inserts, offering a seamless merger of eras.”
The design ethos mirrors a sincere dedication to heritage and craftsmanship. Vernacular techniques take precedence – lime plaster, handcrafted with color pigments from local resources, graces the walls, while reclaimed woodwork echoes stories of antiquity, adding depth and character to the space.
Local artisans and craftsmen became essential collaborators, breathing life into the project with their expertise. Their contributions spanned diverse domains – from intricate woodwork joinery to hand-carved designs and the creation of bespoke local tiles, each element paying homage to the glory of bygone eras.
Challenges were confronted and conquered, particularly in restoring structural stability, a testament to the team’s resilience and commitment to preserving the property’s legacy. The journey wasn’t without its share of discoveries; the ancient Mattancherry market emerged as a treasure trove, inspiring and enriching the project with its history and artifacts.
The house, now revived and rejuvenated, stands not just as a physical structure but as a vessel of cherished memories. With a palette curated to complement wood and brass textures, the color choices exude warmth and nostalgia, a canvas for the legacy that dwells within.
