Every so often, a home transcends its function and becomes a theatre of light, material, and emotion. In this 7,500 sq. ft. duplex residence, designed by Kiran Gala and Sonam Gala Gosalia, Principal Architects at, Kiran Gala & Associates, an architectural narrative unfolds where bold spatial interventions are balanced with minute, handcrafted detail — each corner whispering stories of luxury, permanence, and connection.
Located in Kolkata, at the heart of the residence lies a striking gesture of structural daring: a void carved through the slab to conjure a soaring double-height living space. This vertical expanse becomes the soul of the home, drawing in natural light and forging a visual dialogue between the two levels. It’s a move that not only reshapes the geometry of the space but redefines how one experiences it — from every vantage, there’s a sense of openness that feels both intentional and effortless.
Sharing the design process, Kiran says, “The design language of the home flows in a contemporary cadence, but it resists the coldness often associated with minimalism. Instead, it leans into a sensuous richness of material and a reverence for craft.” The flooring in the public areas anchors this sensibility with a hand-laid, checkered marble pattern. Black and white stone, cut and installed on-site with painstaking precision, offers both a grounding and a rhythmic contrast. It’s a surface that feels at once classical and daring — graphic yet graceful.
Threaded through the core of the home is a sculptural staircase, a feat of engineering and artistry. Formed from interlocking metal rings in matte tones and softened by plush, carpet-clad treads, it ascends like a ribbon, airy yet grounded. This architectural centrepiece doesn’t merely connect floors; it connects moods, drawing one’s eye and movement upward with deliberate elegance.
“Surrounding this vertical anchor, the interiors unfold in a palette of curated warmth. Rich Sucupira veneer clads the cabinetry and wall panels in the shared zones, wrapping the kitchen, dining, and den in deep, natural tones that echo refinement. Against this warmth, maroon accents punctuate the visual field with confidence — never overbearing, always intentional. These bold colour moments, along with delicately applied gold detailing on trims and hardware, lend a subdued opulence that elevates without excess”, informs Sonam.
The kitchen, in particular, speaks the language of modern luxury. Metallic gold shutters shimmer subtly, offset by the earthy grain of Sucupira and the monochrome geometry underfoot. In the adjacent area, a handcrafted green marble bar offers a moment of sculptural indulgence — its deep colour and bespoke form creating a focal point as tactile as it is visual. “Lighting has been choreographed with theatrical sensitivity. Custom chandeliers, suspended in the double-height living area and above the dining table, echo each other in materiality and scale, tying spaces together through rhythm and repetition. Elsewhere, integrated lighting under shelving and wall panels softens transitions, while brushed gold and brass fixtures add a quiet gleam to intimate moments”, adds, Sonam.
In the private quarters, personality finds expression through colour and material specificity. Each bedroom is tailored with nuanced tones and distinctive accents, ensuring a balance between unity and individuality. Wood or engineered flooring brings a softer, more intimate feel underfoot, especially in spaces like the home theatre, where texture meets comfort. Ambient lighting shifts in tone and intensity, responding to both time of day and emotional intent, ensuring that each space adapts to the rhythms of its inhabitants.
Even the powder bathrooms extend the home’s narrative. One dances with black and white marble beneath a flourish of patterned wallpaper, while the other leans into maroon marble and golden fixtures, continuing the home’s overarching palette in more concentrated form. Nothing here is off-the-shelf. Every piece of furniture is custom-designed and handcrafted in India, lending the home an additional layer of cultural specificity and artisanal depth. These pieces don’t merely furnish the home — they belong to it, conceived in tandem with the architecture and calibrated to its moods.
What distinguishes this home is not just its aesthetic cohesion or structural ambition, but the palpable sense of consideration in every junction, finish, and volume. It is a space of nuanced luxury, where movement flows as seamlessly as materials, and where every design choice deepens the emotional resonance of living.
