In the summer of 2021, when the world was in the throes of the pandemic, looking for every sign of hope, a colossal project to manufacture the world’s largest handmade carpet was underway in the bustling carpet city of Bhadohi. The production had been commissioned to one of the finest luxury carpet brands Hands, for the largest mosque in Central Asia: The Grand Mosque of Nur-Sultan and after 50 long days of labour at the peak of the pandemic, the 12,000 m² carpet with a medallion of 70 meters in diameter was articulated. While the project required meticulous effort and good planning, the team also managed to dye the 80 tonnes of 100% New Zealand wool spun domestically. Finally, the divine design is an extension of two things: one, the circle with 8 axes that forms the centrepiece of the main courtyard; and two, the mosque gardens that draw design inspiration from Jannat-ul-Firdaus.
