A 3,500 sq. ft. Mumbai residence wherein architectural warmth and refined materiality come together in perfect harmony.

Blush & Oak in Mumbai is a 3,500 sq. ft. residential project designed by Ar. Seema Puri Mullan and Ar. Zarir Mullan, Principal Architects at SEZA Architects. At the heart of this project, which was designed for a newly-wed couple lies a sculpted expression of craft. Solid oak wood was carved into a contemporary rhythm of thick and thin flutes, creating a panel that forms the dramatic backdrop for the living and dining room. This carved detail, both tactile and refined, became a leitmotif that reappears in the master bedroom, while a base of warm oak veneer runs as a continuous thread through the remaining spaces. The decision to pair this with expanses of white marble flooring lends a quiet luxury, its reflective surface amplifying natural light and balancing the warmth of wood with a timeless clarity.

Sharing the design inspiration behind this project, Seema adds, “When the newlywed couple first opened the door to their apartment, the space held the hushed anticipation of promise, a canvas awaiting the brushstrokes of their shared journey. The design approach took its cue from this very sentiment: a fresh material palette, full of vitality and warmth, to mirror the unfolding chapters of their life together.”

The living room sets the tone for conviviality, with a blush-pink sectional sofa and dining chairs upholstered in a warm tan. Together, they hint at celebrations to come — intimate dinners, hopeful toasts, and gatherings that will animate the home. Abstract artworks punctuate the walls, injecting energy and spontaneity. “Each piece, whether a bold acrylic canvas or a gentle water-colour, is carefully chosen not as ornament but as a voice, contributing to the dialogue of the space. The spatial layout itself is an articulation of evolving lifestyle patterns. A four-bedroom shell was reimagined into a three-bedroom home, allowing the master suite to expand into a sanctuary complete with a private lounge and a generous walk-in wardrobe. With the rise of hybrid working, the design also integrates study tables into every bedroom, recognizing the need for productivity without compromising intimacy”, informs Zarir. Colour becomes an emotional anchor throughout the apartment. In the guest room, cheerful yellow radiates optimism; in the sister’s bedroom, deep burgundy conveys richness and warmth; in the master bedroom, muted off-whites embody calm and intimacy. These hues, when set against the ever-present oak and marble, create a cohesive yet varied experience, making each room a chapter, yet a part of one continuous story. Seema further adds, “Art, in this home, is not an afterthought but a central protagonist. From the botanical playfulness of Deepak Kumar’s plant-inspired pieces to the delicate circular florals of the master lounge, the artworks are carefully curated to converse with the palette of each space. They do not merely decorate walls; they animate them, reinforcing the cheerful, youthful energy that permeates the interiors.”

“The apartment is a narrative in space. Oak contributes texture and rhythm, marble lends clarity and permanence, while blush, burgundy, tan, and yellow weave joy, intimacy, and warmth into the everyday. Every surface, colour, and artwork participates in telling a story: that of two people stepping into life together, crafting not only a home but a future, where design itself becomes part of their unfolding love story”, concludes Zarir.
