Studio K Architects design a home in Mumbai which is a poetic dialogue of textures, tones, and transitions. More than a dwelling, it unfolds like a musical arrangement—where every space holds rhythm, every material resonates, and architecture becomes an immersive, sensory experience.
Designed by Kanchi Choudhary and Kshitij Janve of Studio K Architects, The Bombay Sonata was envisioned for a business family from Nagpur seeking more than a temporary city stopover. Tired of impersonal hotel stays and frequent travel, they desired a space that could serve as both a serene personal retreat and an elegant setting for entertaining in Mumbai—a true home away from home.

What emerged is an orchestrated interplay of material, texture, and atmosphere, where architecture hums and silence holds meaning. This is a home that doesn’t just house a family; it scores their presence, like a sonata composed to echo the life within. The entry sets the tone, an ensemble of wood and brass on the custom-crafted main door leads into a marble-clad foyer inlaid with brass and black marble details. Overhead, a wooden grid ceiling gently directs movement toward the bar and dining area, a warm crescendo of social life within the home.

At its heart, ‘The Bombay Sonata’ embraces visual drama with composure. In the living room, a majestic Brazilian Avocado Granite feature wall strikes the first chord; its wild, natural movement framed with composure by sleek veneer panels. In contrast, plush white Italian sofas provide a minimalist counterpoint, balancing visual intensity with refined restraint. The dining space continues the thematic symphony with a mural-inspired statement panel that adds depth and dimension. The adjacent bar unit, framed in gold-edged fabric, stands out without overpowering. A restrained black-and-white palette grounds the area, letting each sculptural detail sing softly yet surely. Overhead, the wooden grid ceiling returns, uniting the spaces below in rhythm and continuity.

The master suite is composed like a raga at dusk, quiet yet profound. A soft lime plaster backdrop framed in delicate veneer defines the bed wall, while a green-accented study adds just the right dissonance. The attached bathroom plays in darker tones, black marble, statuario, and lime finishes, setting a moody tempo. The second bedroom pays homage to the classics. A walnut poster bed anchors the space, enhanced by crisp white English panelling. The bathroom, wrapped in a single dramatic stone, features a bespoke marble basin cast on site, echoing the room’s thorough, tailored elegance. Meanwhile, the guest bedroom is a departure in tempo; lively, textured, and tactile. Fluted stone and fabric details create warmth, while a bold tropical wallpaper breathes vibrant rhythm into the room. Its ensuite pairs statuario marble with playful blue Kit-Kat mosaic tiles, creating a visual duet that feels fresh and unexpected. In the powder room, a globally exclusive Scrabio washbasin from Italy and a tobacco-hued water closet compose a daring note of indulgence.

With its poetic materiality and intuitive choreography of space, ‘The Bombay Sonata’ is not simply a residence, it’s a lyrical interpretation of life between cities, a space where conversation flows as freely as the sea breeze. Built with boldness and sensitivity, it invites every visitor to pause, listen, and feel. Because in this home, architecture doesn’t just speak, it sings.
