In an exclusive Interview with Society Interiors and Design, architects Xerxes Talati, Ria Talati Advani, and Ratish Patil, share their insights on their design journey and design philosophy and more…

What are the thoughts that cross your mind when you take on new projects?
I am always excited for all the infinite possibilities a new project can bring, while also feeling a large sense of responsibility. For us at TPA, it’s all about balancing the unique challenges each project brings, aligning it to the client’s vision, and figuring out how we can incorporate innovative and long-lasting solutions.

We painstakingly spend the initial stage of a project developing the most robust and elegant plan for our clients as we firmly believe form follows function.

Do you find it difficult to consistently develop innovative designs for such diverse needs?
The journey to consistently craft innovative designs is as challenging as it is rewarding… Each project and client is unique and breathes new life into the creative process, offering a fresh palette of ideas and inspirations. But there are certain foundational rules and best practices that we never waiver from, that are a part of our design fabric and culture.

Propelling my creativity forward is the collaboration process with the team at our studio; there is always a great learning curve for all, as we gather at the centre table and get going with the ideas. Together, we stay curious and work hard to fulfill our client’s every desire while striving to deliver an inspired design, while staying true to our core principles of functionality, durability and highly detailed design.

What are your best personal experiences while working with a diverse national and international clientele?

Engaging with clients from different cultures and backgrounds through our work is incredibly enriching. And it’s not only about the international clientele; even within India, we see many different perspectives and lifestyles as we go from region to region, and even within Mumbai!

I like to think of it as opening a new book each time, filled with different stories and perspectives that broaden one’s understanding of the world. I cherish these interactions because they teach me the value of truly listening and embracing each client’s unique vision, ideas and background. We believe in building long-lasting relationships with our clients; some of them third-generation!

What Defines My Work

At the heart of my work is a deep sense of commitment to crafting spaces that are as elegant and beautiful as possible. However, I am equally driven by the cornerstones of functionality through pragmatic and detailed durable design. It’s about balance and ensuring that every space looks good, feels right and works well.

What are your most challenging projects?

Palais Royale has been one of the most challenging projects we have worked on recently. This project truly tests our skills that require weaving modern design into an urban fabric, considering all the constraints that building in a city like Mumbai brings. Moreover, large urban projects such as this one, bring complexities from navigating diverse stakeholder expectations to addressing environmental challenges and numerous city and budgetary constraints. Each project is a complex puzzle, and solving it is a challenge and passion.

Having won so many national and international awards is there something more coveted that you aspire for?

While awards are great for boosting morale and creativity at the studio, the true goal is to create timeless architecture and design. It’s all about creating spaces that stand out visually but also enrich the urban landscape.

My passion is to design landmark projects that inspire and stand the test of time. I aspire to achieve this with every line drawn and every plan envisioned.

Do you think we’re at par with the West regarding architecture and design?

Indian design and Indian society as a whole, has a rich and unique heritage that is rapidly changing with a boom in international materials, methods and standards.

Designing in our country comes with a unique set of challenges, but creating authentic spaces while keeping our quickly evolving Indian society in mind is essential. Celebrating our unique Indian lifestyles and traditions is essential to balance out the global influx and to preserve and evolve our own distinctive design perspectives. But most importantly continued investment in education is crucial to foster new generations to create a unique Indian voice.

What are your forthcoming projects?

We are developing a few high-rise towers that epitomise ultra-luxury living like Palais Royale and Naman Xana in Mumbai. In Pune, we’re enhancing the academic landscape with our work at the Bharati Vidyapeeth University. We are also working on various projects in hospitality, culture, residential, and commercial design.

How has technology influenced your designs?

Technology has revolutionised architecture, from design and visualisation tools to construction techniques and materials. The advanced software of today allow for precise modelling and simulation of spaces, which enhances creativity and efficiency dramatically. New sustainable technologies, such as smart building systems and renewable energy solutions, enable us to achieve building design that is more environmentally friendly and user￾centric. Technology also facilitates better project management and collaboration across geographies streamlining the project journey considerably.

What is your take on sustainable architecture?
Sustainable architecture is not just a trend but a necessity. It involves designing buildings that minimize environmental impact and enhance the human experience through design choices and smart design. This includes using the right materials, harnessing renewable energy and ensuring water conservation. Sustainable design should also consider the building’s lifecycle and its long-term impact on the community. I believe architects have a responsibility to lead the way in promoting sustainability and resilience in our built environment and in turn the people.

Message to Aspiring Architects from India

To budding architects, I would say: stay curious, embrace learning, and remain passionate about your work. Understand the cultural and environmental context of your projects and strive to innovate while respecting tradition. Sustainability and the client should be at the core of your design philosophy. Collaboration and networking are crucial – learn from others and share your knowledge. Most importantly, let your designs be a reflection of your values and a force for positive change in society.

We showcase a few select projects from TPA’s diverse and expansive portfolio, featuring projects that exemplify the firm’s unparalleled versatility and expertise across various architectural and interior design domains.

Aangan Allegory, Surat, India

Aangan Allegory stands as a magnificent testament to architectural fusion within Surat’s bustling township community. This sprawling 7-bedroom residence beautifully fuses contemporary aesthetics with deep￾rooted traditional values, creating a harmonious space for a multigenerational family.

At its heart lies the Aangan, a reinterpretation of the traditional Indian courtyard, now transformed into a central gathering point that bridges past and present. The architectural narrative revolves around a grand double-height living room, strategically positioned as the nucleus from which all other spaces emanate. Here, every detail speaks of thoughtful design, from the striking double-height feature wall adorned with meticulously book-matched marble to a bespoke sculpture symbolizing familial unity and support. On the opposite side, a bold and quirky 15 x 5 ft. rug adds a splash of character, reflecting the family’s vibrant personality and values.

Spanning an impressive 8,500 sq. ft. across two levels, Aangan Allegory effortlessly caters to the diverse needs and lifestyles of over 20 family members. The lower level is dedicated to communal living, featuring a spacious family room, a central dining area, and a serene balcony, complemented by three elegantly appointed bedrooms designed for the older generation. Meanwhile, the upper level caters to the younger members with four private bedrooms, each with access to an expansive balcony that serves as an outdoor haven for relaxation and social gatherings.

One of the most striking architectural elements is the statement spiral staircase, envisioned not just as a functional feature but as a sculptural centerpiece that ties the home together. Its sinuous form, resembling a floating ribbon, adds a touch of artistry while symbolizing the seamless connection between different generations and spaces.

The material palette throughout the home is a study in refined elegance, combining timeless grey and white-toned marble with custom-designed rugs and furnishings that inject warmth and personality into each room. Every detail, from the intricate custom rugs to the bespoke furniture pieces, is meticulously curated to enhance the home’s aesthetic cohesion while reflecting the family’s distinct identity.

Each bedroom on the upper level is a sanctuary designed to reflect the unique personalities of its occupants. The bathrooms are equally bespoke, showcasing luxurious materials such as terrazzo and metal blends or sophisticated finishes in pastel hues and rich, dark tones.

In the dining area, elegance meets innovation with a custom three-veneer wall treatment, where distinct laser-cut veneers merge seamlessly to create a captivating backdrop that underscores the family’s appreciation for craftsmanship and individuality.

Aangan Allegory is more than just a residence; it is a testament to architectural excellence and familial unity. Through its seamless integration of traditional and contemporary elements, this home not only provides a luxurious living space but also preserves and celebrates the family’s heritage while embracing modern living.

Luxury Office Interiors, Nariman Point, Mumbai

Talati and Partners have designed a breathtaking 2,500 sq. ft office space that seamlessly blends Scandinavian design ethos with Italian sensibilities, resulting in a Hygge-inspired haven. Located at the intersection of warmth and contemporary style, this workspace exudes a sense of coziness and luxury through a meticulous amalgamation of materials and design principles.

The core concept behind this stunning interior was to create an open, airy environment that fosters both productivity and comfort. Natural light floods the space through expansive windows, complementing the subtle palette and minimalistic wooden flooring that enhances the overall spatial quality. The use of terrazzo, with its intricate natural details, not only adds visual interest but also serves to balance the design elements, despite challenges posed by a ceiling height of 6 feet 6 inches.

Within the 2,500 sq. ft layout, 1,000 sq. ft is dedicated to key areas such as the main cabin, a VIP lounge, and a boardroom, while the remaining space accommodates a lounge, reception area, workspaces, washrooms, and a handyman’s cabin. Each zone is carefully curated to maintain the office’s luxurious appeal while ensuring practicality and ease of maintenance.

The reception area serves as an inviting introduction to the office, featuring a striking terrazzo table as its centerpiece. This focal point is complemented by Latho veneer lining the passage, imparting a natural, luxurious feel that is further accentuated by integrated lighting. Moving into the main cabin, natural light filters through expansive Durall windows, casting a soft glow on plush leather furniture and a Poltrona Frau sofa, highlighting the space’s blend of elegance and modern comfort.

The lounge area takes cues from Japanese design with shoji screens, integrating seamlessly with Scandinavian and Italian influences to create a serene yet functional space. NR-washed bronze glass windows, adorned with blinds from Hunter Douglas, add a touch of subtle luxury while maintaining privacy and aesthetic cohesion.

Geometric contrasts define the architectural landscape, with beams and columns adding depth and dimension to the design. Smart lighting solutions, including striplights and spotlights, not only illuminate the space but also enhance the display of artwork strategically placed throughout the office. Art channels and geometric grids on the walls provide flexibility for showcasing artwork, merging Indian art with contemporary sensibilities to enrich the overall aesthetic.

Materiality plays a pivotal role in the office’s design narrative, with reused terrazzo flooring and wall finishes lending a unique warmth and elegance that surpasses marble and ceramic. Sustainability is key, as recycled materials are integrated seamlessly into the design, contributing to both aesthetic charm and environmental responsibility.

In essence, Talati and Partners have created more than just an office space; they have fashioned a sanctuary where Scandinavian simplicity meets Italian finesse, enveloping visitors and occupants alike in an atmosphere of modern luxury and timeless comfort.

Urban Biophilia: A Sustainable Mixed-Use Development Proposal, Mumbai

Talati and Partners are spearheading an ambitious project in Mumbai’s dynamic financial district—an expansive development spanning an impressive 2,50,000 square meters. Nestled amidst the city’s urban landscape, this visionary initiative comprises three towering structures that seamlessly integrate office spaces, vibrant dining options, public areas, and verdant sky gardens, ushering in a new era of mixed-use excellence.

At the heart of this groundbreaking endeavor lies biophilic design, which serves to enhance the well-being of its occupants by fostering a profound connection with nature. Through the strategic incorporation of abundant greenery, cascading gardens, and open-air balconies, the design not only beautifies the skyline but also purifies the air, mitigates noise pollution, and optimizes natural light. These elements collectively contribute to a rejuvenating environment that promotes productivity, creativity, and overall satisfaction.

Architecturally, the project embodies fluid forms with chamfered edges and seamless undulations, creating an expansive visual experience that enhances peripheral views and fosters a sense of openness within the complex. Combatting the urban heat island effect, each tower’s orientation and the strategic placement of green spaces act as natural cooling elements, ensuring a comfortable microclimate throughout the development.

Comprising three towers soaring 110 meters high, the complex boasts extensive parking facilities spread across three basement levels and five podiums. The ground floor is dedicated to enticing F&B outlets, while the plaza level offers exclusive amenities such as a sophisticated clubhouse complete with guest rooms, food courts, and recreational areas, catering to the diverse needs of residents and visitors alike.

The meticulous circulation design ensures clear delineation between commercial and leisure zones, facilitating efficient movement and minimizing congestion. Dedicated shuttle lifts and separate lobbies further enhance accessibility, separating office traffic from recreational visitors to optimize convenience and user experience.

The pinnacle of luxury awaits on the club level, where residents can indulge in a plethora of amenities including a lavish swimming pool, rejuvenating spa, upscale salon, and state-of-the-art business center. Meanwhile, verdant green terraces arranged in a staggered pattern punctuate the landscape, providing tranquil retreats amidst the urban hustle.

Emphasizing sustainability, the project integrates advanced solar energy solutions into its design, harnessing renewable resources to power the expansive complex and reduce its carbon footprint. Facade materials such as sandwiched DGL Glass panels not only enhance aesthetic appeal but also contribute to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

With a steadfast commitment to achieving IGBC Platinum certification, this landmark development sets a new benchmark for sustainable urban living. By harmonizing biophilic principles with cutting-edge design innovations, Talati and Partners are poised to redefine the urban landscape, creating an unparalleled oasis that embodies modernity, luxury, and ecological responsibility in equal measure.
