For generations, one of the oldest and most iconic horse racing Clubs in the country – the Royal Western India Turf Club – Pune has been more than just a venue; a hallowed ground where the spirit of racing pulses through every brick and beam. In a stunning transformation that marries heritage with contemporary elegance, thanks to Yohan Poonawalla and his Foundation, whose vision and dedication led to the restoration of the iconic Pune Turf Club. Yohan and Michelle Poonawalla’s generous support has come as a lifeline to the club, enabling it to generate crucial additional revenue. This timely financial windfall has been instrumental in bolstering the club’s revenue, contributing crores to the growth and sustainability of Indian horse racing and breathing new life into this historic landmark while preserving its timeless charm.
Michelle Poonawalla, philanthropist and entrepreneur is the creative force behind the renovation and has masterfully blended the club’s heritage with contemporary design. The result? A stunning fusion of old-world charm and modern opulence. A labour of love spanning two years from 2022 to 2024, the newly renovated club is a testament to the Poonawalla family’s deep-rooted passion for horse racing & breeding. The extensive renovation encompasses a complete overhaul of the club’s infrastructure, including the refurbishment of 24 guest rooms with modern amenities, reception lobbies, public spaces and offices as well as the revitalisation of four charming cottages, transforming the historic space.
Led by the artistic eye of Michelle Poonawalla and her team at MYP Design Studio, the transformation is nothing short of miraculous. The grand ballroom, with its restored wooden ceiling and dazzling chandeliers, now exudes a regal charm that transports members to a bygone era. The verandahs once faded remnants of the past, have been reborn as elegant spaces where time seems to stand still. Members can now wind down in the newly renovated card room, bar, lounge, and dining area. Beyond the interior transformation, the club’s exterior has also undergone a significant uplift. The sprawling lawns and gardens have been meticulously landscaped and fenced, creating a serene outdoor space for relaxation and safety.
“The Pune Turf Club holds a special place in our hearts. I have fond memories of visiting here as a child. Yohan has always been very passionate about his grandfather’s legacy and he always wanted to continue supporting the horse racing and breeding business along with his father.” shares Michelle Poonawalla. “We wanted to honour its rich history while creating a modern space that would be enjoyed by generations to come. It was essential to maintain the club’s heritage, and we’ve carefully preserved elements like the design of the old doors and a few key furniture pieces. This renovation is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s a tribute to our family’s enduring passion for horse racing & breeding. We hope this revitalised club will inspire future generations to embrace the sport and create lasting memories.”
The Poonawalla Stud Farms, established (as the Poona Stud Farm) in 1946 by Yohan’s grandfather the late Soli A. Poonawalla is renowned for producing champions
on the racetrack and has been an integral part of India’s racing landscape for decades. The family’s commitment to the sport is evident in their unwavering support for the Pune Turf Club.
