Utkarsha Vastukaran Design Studio masterfully brought to life the vision of Colonel Saab, an Indian modern heritage restaurant nestled in the iconic former heritage site of Trafalgar Square, Central London.
In the bustling epicenter of Trafalgar Square, Colonel Saab stands as a beacon of luxury and culture, offering more than just fine dining. This one-of-a-kind restaurant is an ode to India’s rich heritage, designed as a heartfelt tribute to the Colonel and his wife. Tushar Joshi, Principal Designer, Utkarsha Vastukaran Design Studio, brought the vision of Colonel Saab to life, crafting an Indian modern heritage restaurant located in the former heritage site of Trafalgar Square, Central London. Conceptualized by Roop Pratap Choudhary, Colonel Saab offers a refined Indian fine-dining experience inspired by the travel tales of his father, Col. Manbeer Choudhary, and mother Binny Choudhary, who journeyed across the Indian subcontinent. Tushar’s design harmoniously blends Indian cultural elements with the personal narratives of the Choudhary family, creating a space that is as evocative as it is elegant.
Colonel Saab’s culinary philosophy celebrates India’s regional diversity, and the interiors are a seamless extension of this narrative. From intricately carved jharokhas (traditional Indian windows) to vibrant Rajasthani murals, every design element amplifies the authenticity and richness of the menu. The soft hues of cream and gold, punctuated by bold accents, evoke a sense of royal grandeur, mirroring the restaurant’s ethos of blending tradition with sophistication.
The restaurant’s colour scheme draws from India’s regal tones, creating an ambiance of timeless luxury. Deep emerald greens, royal blues, rich maroons, and muted golds come together to envelop diners in a warm yet grand atmosphere. Natural wood, brass accents, and intricate patterns inspired by Indian textiles further enhance the visual depth, evoking nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary charm.
“At the heart of Colonel Saab’s interiors lies an extraordinary collection of handcrafted furniture and curated art. Collaborating with master Indian artisans, the restaurant features hand-carved wooden tables, chairs adorned with traditional fabrics, and custom-made upholstery inspired by Indian silks and brocades. The curated art collection is a marvel in itself—16th-century Tanjore paintings, antique temple doors, and rare Warli artwork are just a glimpse of what’s on display. Other treasures include a Mughal Zardosi fan, a Rabab lute, and intricate Phulkari embroidery, each piece narrating a unique story. These elements collectively transform the space into a living museum, where every artefact becomes a conversation starter.” explains Tushar Joshi, Principal Designer, Utkarsha Vastukaran Design Studio.
The thoughtful seating design enhances the versatility of Colonel Saab. The restaurant offers private dining areas for intimate meals, banquettes with vibrant cushions for casual dining, and large communal tables for celebrations. Upholstered in rich Indian fabrics, the seating merges comfort with elegance. Whether it’s an informal gathering or a grand event, the layout caters to diverse dining experiences while maintaining an air of exclusivity.
Lighting is central to the ambiance at Colonel Saab, carefully curated to complement every occasion. Traditional Indian lanterns and brass-and-blown-glass chandeliers provide a warm, golden glow, while modern pendant lights add a contemporary edge. Adjustable lighting ensures the space transitions effortlessly from a lively lunch setting to an intimate dinner environment. Spotlights highlight the intricate artwork and architectural features, ensuring no detail goes unnoticed.
Spanning two levels, Colonel Saab accommodates up to 150 guests with ease, balancing openness with pockets of privacy. Two exclusive private dining rooms, seating up to 26 guests each, offer the perfect setting for special occasions. The main dining area, bathed in natural light beneath an ornate glass atrium, exudes grandeur, while the mezzanine level provides a more secluded yet equally lavish experience.
Colonel Saab’s interiors are designed to evoke the warmth and charm of a well-loved home. Persian carpets, sepia-toned family portraits, and antique artifacts create an ambiance brimming with nostalgia. The gentle hum of conversation, the soft clinking of glasses, and the melodious strains of instrumental music set the perfect backdrop for an indulgent dining experience
