Step into a world of opulence at Sishupalgarh, a breath-taking 23,000 sq. ft. farmhouse in Bhubaneshwar, designed by Chirag Design Studio.

Nestled in Bhubaneshwar, Sishupalgarh is a stunning farmhouse that is enveloped by lush greenery that stretches endlessly, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The vision for the Sisupalgarh farmhouse emerged from a desire to craft a space that seamlessly integrates architecture, interior design, and landscaping, resulting in a fluid dialogue between the built form and its natural surroundings. Designed by Ar. Chirag Swain, Founder & Principal Architect, Chirag Design Studio along with his design team — Rajashree Parida, Bhavana Patra and Vijay Sharma, the project has been envisioned as an unconventional retreat, where-in the interior design employs distinctive elements that redefine luxury and artistry. Spread across a plot Area 12 Acres and a Built-up area of about 23,000 sq. ft., every space within the farmhouse is meticulously curated to evoke sophistication, ensuring a cohesive yet bold aesthetic that transforms the residence into an architectural statement.

At the heart of the design is a theme centred around refined opulence, reflected in bespoke features that elevate the spatial experience. A 12-foot single-piece veneer door, accompanied by a 10-foot custom-crafted cylindrical wooden handle, establishes a grand entrance, setting the tone for the spaces beyond. Accents of blue veneer introduce an element of visual contrast, enhancing the richness of the material palette while maintaining a sense of understated elegance. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that luxury is not merely an aesthetic choice but an intrinsic part of the design ethos.

Sharing insights on the design process, Chirag says, “The interior design approach was guided by the need to harmonize architectural elements with their natural surroundings, ensuring an immersive experience where interior spaces dissolve into the landscape. The farmhouse achieves a balance between subtlety and grandeur, with the rooms exuding quiet sophistication, while the dining, living, and bar areas adopt a more dramatic approach. This deliberate interplay between restraint and extravagance results in a home that feels both intimate and expansive, catering to moments of solitude as well as lavish gatherings.”

A series of carefully curated design features underscore the project’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. The open dry kitchen, punctuated by a breakfast counter, is a masterpiece of intricate detailing, where veneer joints and brass inlays add layers of refinement.

The monolithic, sculpted staircase emerges as the defining element of the space — an architectural marvel carved by skilled artisans – it indicates the historical importance of the location. “The first flight crafted from hand sculptured Khandolite ‘relic stone’ offers the inmates not just a sensory aesthetic experience but also a palpable connection to the enigmatic allure of the passage of time. The second flight of stairs is composed of onyx stone contrasted with black marquina marble and illuminated with built-in lighting. It stands as a testament to technical precision and design ingenuity, capturing the essence of grandeur and sculptural beauty.

One of the most formidable challenges in the execution of this project was the handling of the monolithic staircase, a structural behemoth weighing nearly 17 tons. The logistics of transporting and precisely chiselling the stone demanded an extraordinary level of planning and craftsmanship. Overcoming these challenges was a testament to the seamless collaboration between designers, artisans and engineers, resulting in a flawless execution that preserved the integrity of the vision.

The material palette serves as a symphony of textures, curated to reinforce the narrative of luxury. Exotic marbles define the bathrooms, while sodalite semi-precious stone lends an artistic dimension to the bar counter. Gold leafing accents punctuate the space, elevating its regal undertones. The orchestrated material interplay ensures that while certain spaces exude a quiet, understated elegance, others make a bold, unapologetic statement, culminating in an architectural masterpiece that embodies the true spirit of refined luxury.
