Rêve Rattan Debuts in Chennai: A Legacy of Authentic Craftsmanship and Sustainable Elegance

ChennaiRêve Rattan, India’s pioneering name in high-quality rattan furniture, has officially launched its first flagship studio in Chennai. The story of Rêve Rattan is not just a tale of furniture—it is a celebration of rattan, the versatile and elegant material that has defined the brand’s legacy. As a fourth-generation endeavour, Rêve Rattan draws upon a deep-rooted family tradition, crafting exquisite rattan furniture that blends heritage, innovation, and sustainability. Located on  Govindappa Naicken Street, this new destination promises to redefine home décor by offering a blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and sustainable luxury.

The name Rêve, meaning “dream” in French, encapsulates the brand’s mission to inspire people to embrace sustainable materials while preserving the craftsmanship of bygone eras. The newly inaugurated 900 sq. ft. studio stands as a testament to Rêve Rattan’s dedication to authenticity and craftsmanship. Every piece on display has undergone rigorous quality testing, including load-bearing, stress, and comfort tests, ensuring it meets the highest standards. Customers visiting the Chennai studio can experience iconic designs firsthand, including signature pieces like the Haven Lounge Chair, Mosaic Chair, Zenith Dining Chair, and Halo Bar Stool.

“Rattan isn’t just a material—it is an experience. Known for its strength, flexibility, and aesthetic charm, rattan has transformed from being a humble resource to the cornerstone of luxury interiors. Rattan furniture, with its distinct webbing and intricate designs, has become synonymous with timeless sophistication, finding its way into wardrobes, patios, and bespoke interior spaces. What sets Rêve Rattan apart is its commitment to crafting pieces exclusively from rattan. Unlike other manufacturers in India, who may treat rattan as a complement or secondary material, Rêve Rattan celebrates it as the star of every creation. Each product, from intricately woven chairs to luxurious sofas, exudes the elegance and durability that only rattan can provide. The choice of Chennai was natural for us. With our roots firmly planted here, it made perfect sense to debut our flagship studio in the city. This store serves as a bridge between our rich legacy and the future of luxury rattan furniture in India,” explains M Preeth, designer and promoter of Reve Rattan.

Rêve Rattan takes pride in its design philosophy, where tradition and innovation coexist seamlessly. By blending heritage techniques like wicker weaving with modern design trends, the brand creates furniture that is as functional as it is beautiful. A prime example of this is the Mosaic Chair, a vibrant fusion of four colours woven into one stunning piece. In an era where sustainability is paramount, Rêve Rattan stands out as a beacon of eco-consciousness. Rattan, a fast-growing and renewable resource, is the cornerstone of their products, making it a superior choice over traditional wood. The brand’s commitment to ethical sourcing and environmentally friendly practices extends to every aspect of its production process, from dyeing techniques to weaving methods.

With the Chennai store as its foundation, Rêve Rattan has ambitious plans to expand to other Indian cities and explore international markets. The brand aims to become the global leader in rattan furniture, blending sustainable practices with timeless craftsmanship. Future initiatives include participating in prominent interior and architecture exhibitions and fostering partnerships to introduce the beauty of rattan furniture to new audiences.

Rêve Rattan’s Chennai store is more than just a showroom—it’s an experience. Customers are invited to touch, feel, and immerse themselves in the world of high-quality rattan furniture. As the brand looks to the future, it is committed to reviving the rattan industry in India, one exquisite piece at a time.

A Legacy Rooted in Family Heritage

The story of Rêve Rattan is deeply entwined with passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, carried forward by four generations of visionaries. The journey began in 1950 with the entrepreneurial spirit of the family’s great-grandmother Smt. Buri Bai, who laid the foundation for Sha Sivadanmull Kheemchand (SSK), the parent company of Rêve Rattan. Recognizing the untapped potential of rattan—a raw material abundant in India’s Northeast—she pioneered its introduction to the Indian market, effectively creating a niche that would flourish under her stewardship.

Her groundbreaking efforts established rattan as a valued resource, inspiring subsequent generations to innovate and expand its uses. By introducing superior rattan varieties such as Lunty, Tohiti, and Manau from Southeast Asia, the family elevated the material’s reputation. These varieties, known for their strength, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal, set a new benchmark in the industry, making rattan a preferred choice for high-quality furniture and interiors.

The family’s ingenuity was further demonstrated with the introduction of rattan webbing, a game-changing innovation that revolutionized Indian interiors. From wardrobes and patios to luxury furniture, rattan webbing transformed traditional perceptions of the material, cementing its place in both functional and decorative design.

The family’s reach was not limited to India. Over the decades, SSK established itself as a trusted exporter, catering to international markets in Albania, Dubai, and the Maldives. These expansions showcased the company’s ability to meet global standards, positioning Indian rattan as a competitive player in international markets under the leadership of Mr. Ranjit Kumar, Mr. Manesh Kumar, Mr. Jagdish Kumar and Mr. Praveen Kumar.

Today, the fourth generation under the leadership of M Preeth continues this illustrious legacy with the launch of Rêve Rattan. The brand is a testament to the family’s dedication to reviving high-quality rattan furniture and redefining its perception in the Indian market. By focusing on sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship, Rêve Rattan aims to bring this once-forgotten material back into mainstream interiors while honouring its rich heritage.
