Knoll Introduces Bauhaus-Era Collections with New Ultra-Matte Colour Palette

Knoll, renowned for its architectural interior designs, has unveiled a striking update to its Bauhaus-era collections by introducing three new ultra-matte finishes. For the first time, the iconic tubular steel pieces are available in white, onyx, and an archival dark red, revitalizing classics like the MR Chair and MR Tables by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as the Wassily Chair, Cesca Chairs and Stools, and Laccio Tables by Marcel Breuer.

Jonathan Olivares, Senior Vice President of Design at Knoll, remarked on the significance of these new colours: “Drawing from the original painted frames crafted in German workshops, we’ve taken a bold step forward in recolouring these designs. The introduction of white, onyx, and red hues transforms how we perceive these tubular structures, offering a fresh perspective on their iconic forms.”

Rooted in the Bauhaus tradition, where Mies van der Rohe and Breuer first presented these collections, the new colour palette pays homage to the institution’s influential aesthetics. The dark red finish, in particular, harkens back to a historic Bauhaus colour used on the MR Chair, while white and onyx were chosen for their ability to play with light, accentuate geometric shapes, and define spatial boundaries.

Embracing Bauhaus principles, Knoll’s expanded colour options add a new layer of richness to the tactile and tonal materiality of interiors in residential, hospitality, and workplace environments. This update not only honours the legacy of these iconic designs but also propels them into contemporary spaces with renewed vibrancy and sophistication.
