Designed by FOAID Designs & Collaborations, led by Ekta Agarwal and her team of Parul Agarwal VK, Thanveer Moosa, and Manimaran, the 11 House in Saligramam, Chennai, epitomizes spacious luxury and thoughtful design. Spanning an impressive 10,000 sq. ft., this residence is not just a house but a dream come true for its owner. With a vision years in the making, the homeowner entrusted the team with complete creative freedom, resulting in a harmonious blend of natural light, ventilation, and comfortable luxury.
Minimal setbacks and carefully designed light wells on all sides ensure that natural light floods the interiors. Large windows and expansive balconies on the North and West sides enhance ventilation and create a seamless connection with the outdoors. The ground floor features an open-plan layout with a spacious kitchen at its heart.
“Adding a unique touch, a small studio apartment was designed for the matriarch of the family. This innovative space includes an open kitchen, a living room, and a private entry for her guests, offering her both independence and proximity to her loved ones. Adjacent to the formal living room is a double-height courtyard, affectionately called the “chai point,” which is used for serene morning and evening tea sessions. At its center, a thoughtfully curated fountain serves as a striking focal point, visible from the main entry.” Explains Ekta Agarwal.
The first floor reflects the family’s collective vision, with each room tailored to individual preferences. The cosy common living area, with west light filtering through a jaali wall, provides a private sanctuary for the family of five.
The master suite is a sanctuary of elegance, featuring a double room with a walk-in wardrobe separated by a custom gold-framed sliding partition with fluted glass. The en-suite bathroom, clad in exquisite marble, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Its curved corners, grooved marble details, and indirect lighting enhance the luxurious ambiance, creating a space free of cuts and edges.
The elder daughter’s room exudes a rustic charm, inspired by her love of nature. Green accents, floral artwork, and a balcony filled with plants create an oasis of calm. A unique dresser partition offers a private space for her growing needs.
In contrast, the younger daughter’s room is modern and curvilinear, mirroring her sharp and vibrant personality. Each piece of furniture was custom-designed, including a feature study table that doubles as a partition between the wardrobe and sleeping area. Natural light from a large balcony-facing window reduces the need for artificial lighting, while the bed panel optimizes this illumination.
Connecting these personalized spaces is a central corridor that serves as a gallery. With intricate marble inlay flooring and artistic cabinetry, it creates a visual link between the living room, foyer, and master bedroom, embodying the essence of an art exhibition.
The second-floor houses the son’s room, designed with subtlety to allow future renovations. A stateof-the-art home theater, featuring motorized plush leather seating and SPC flooring in a unique pattern, offers a cinematic experience rivaling a mini PVR. A teak wood Chinese tea table at the center adds a touch of sophistication, making it a favoured spot for intimate gatherings. The room opens onto a large balcony, ideal for entertaining friends and family.
The terrace is a haven for outdoor living, featuring a covered, automated cabana and a private barbecue area. Customized cane furniture and artifacts sourced directly from China enhance the space. The terrace has become a favorite spot for the family, especially during Chennai’s frequent rains.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the 11 House is the seamless integration of in-built furniture, crafted in the client’s own furniture factory. This collaboration between the design team and the client’s resources brought the vision to life with unparalleled precision and creativity. From the intricate details to the grand gestures, every element of the house reflects the synergy of design and craftsmanship.
