Eastern Grove, unfolds as a refined dialogue between classical and contemporary design sensibilities.

Eastern Grove is a residence in Mumbai that unfolds as a poised dialogue between classical sensibilities and modern restraint, articulated through a transitional design language that values nuance over noise. Spread across an area of 1600 sq. ft., the home has been designed by ID. Hitesh Shahanand, Ar. Nirmay Shah & ID. Malay Shah, Principal Architect/ Designers at HS Desiigns. Rooted in earthy hues and tactile materials, the home embraces a sense of grounded elegance — one that is simultaneously refined and intimate.

The spatial narrative begins at the entrance corridor, where brutalist-inspired sculpted figures emerge from the walls, each holding polygonal lanterns that serve both as luminaires and sculptural interventions.

Sharing the design process, Malay says, “More than just a transitional zone, this striking installation transforms the threshold into an immersive, gallery-like experience — setting the tone for the home’s meditative spatiality. Textured concrete block panels and minimalist wall cladding deepen the sense of monumentality and rhythm, lending weight and presence without visual excess.”

That same sculptural sensibility continues into the living room, where material contrast and compositional balance create visual tension and harmony. A plush green tufted sofa anchors the space with plush opulence, while sculptural brown chairs and an oversized, clean-lined coffee table introduce a sense of curated eclecticism. This carefully orchestrated mix of bold silhouettes and soft finishes is grounded by herringbone wood flooring — its linear texture offering a quiet counterpoint to the black marble accents seen throughout. Together, these elements embody a high￾impact, low-noise aesthetic that feels both deliberate and lived-in. A large industrial-style ceiling fan adds a utilitarian edge, while sheer drapes and floral curtains soften the room’s overall tone, diffusing natural light with quiet grace.

The dining area continues the visual language of rounded forms and muted luxury with a circular marble-top table surrounded by curved￾back chairs. Fluted panelling and custom-designed screens define space without compromising openness, lending an ornamental yet restrained quality. Adjacent to this, the kitchen becomes a composition in controlled contrast — sleek grey cabinetry paired with bold terracotta shutters, grounded by black granite countertops that add visual gravitas.

Each bedroom in the home presents a distinct narrative while remaining rooted in the overarching design ethos. “The master bedroom is serene and grounded, defined by soft fabric tones, clean silhouettes, and a sculptural circular wall art that serves as a contemplative focal point”, says Nirmay. In another bedroom, a hand-carved wood panel featuring two cranes beneath a tree is framed by dark fluted partitions — an ode to craftsmanship and quiet storytelling. The third bedroom leans into classical refinement, with ornate mouldings and a four￾poster bed that evokes the charm of a European boutique suite.

Throughout the residence, the interplay between material richness and design restraint results in interiors that are elegant yet unpretentious. “A measured palette of neutrals, blacks, and warm browns provides a muted canvas, against which sculptural forms and artisanal flourishes come alive. Light is treated as an architectural element, not merely illumination, guiding the eye across curated vignettes of form and shadow”, informs Hitesh. It is a space that does not seek to impress loudly, but rather reveals its layers slowly — through texture, shadow, proportion, and craft. The architecture leans into timelessness, where every surface is intentional, and every space holds a sense of permanence, purpose, and poetic quiet.
