Designed by Design Consortia, this multi-generational home beautifully blends tradition with modernity, reflecting timeless values through a contemporary material palette.
Located in the posh Vasant Vihar area of New Delhi, Harmony House is a sprawling 15,000 sqft residence designed to serve as a multi-generational family home. Designed by Ar. Sumit Malik and Ar. Rohit Garg, Principal Architect, Design Consortia the team aimed at catering to four generations of a family, where the layout provides ample social spaces to exchange family stories and memorable experiences while maintaining privacy in the personal areas. As a result, the architectural intent transcends the traditional concept of a house, becoming a testament to the family’s love, memories, and social structure.

“Designing a home for a multi-generational family comes with unique challenges; the primary one is creating spaces that maintain the family’s privacy while fostering togetherness. The design needed to balance individual needs with collective family values. Another significant challenge has been ensuring that the structure adapts to the changing dynamics of a growing family. Hence, the project demanded thoughtful spatial configuration to create an environment that provides modern comforts while ensuring zones for familial warmth and interactions.” Explains Ar. Sumit Malik, Principal Architect, Design Consortia.

The spatial planning of Harmony House emphasises visual connectivity and the interplay of volumes while preserving individual privacy. It has a basement, stilt floor, ground floor, first floor, second floor, and a terrace, each offering unique spaces and functionalities to suit various needs and preferences. With eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, a kitchen, two pantries, two living-dining rooms, an entertainment hall, a puja room, stilt parking, and servant quarters, the residence is judiciously crafted to cater to the diverse needs of its residents.

“The overarching design vocabulary embodies the family’s legacy and values. Privacy is maintained by segregating spaces according to usage. The design ensures that private and communal areas are well-defined yet offer a clear line of vision; this arrangement allows family members to enjoy their personal spaces while feeling part of a larger, cohesive environment. Upon entering, one is greeted by a double-height foyer that sets the tone for the house. At the core of the house lies the dining area and a triple-height atrium that serves as the central gathering space, overlooking the kitchen area and an adjoining sitting area. The staircase and corridors offer a panoramic view of the house, showcasing its expansive layout.” Ar. Rohit Garg, Principal Architect, Design Consortia

Modern materials such as glass, natural stone, and textured surfaces craft an elegant and functional exterior and have been thematically used in interiors. A luxurious entrance with grand double doors welcomes one into the home. From thereon, each room tells a story. On the ground floor, the dining area, with its double-height atrium, serves as the vibrant hub of the home. Pendant lights and pops of colour add an energising touch, making it the perfect gathering spot for the family. Abutting this space is a living area characterised by plush upholstery and metallic accents. Neutral tones provide the perfect backdrop, allowing the vibrant elements to stand out. This floor also has a bar area and a family room. T

he basement has been designed for social interactions and entertainment, with another dining space, bar, and living area. Influences of European interiors, such as wall moulding, dark wood, and glitzy chandeliers, define this space. On the upper floors are the bedrooms, designed as private retreats catering to zany themes for the youngest members and elegant sanctuaries for the older generations. Materials such as mirrors, wood, stone, glass, and metal accents add a sense of drama and style to the interiors.
Harmony House seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with the homeowner’s desire for privacy and togetherness. The thoughtful spatial planning, use of modern materials, and attention to detail make this residence a true reflection of the family’s legacy. It stands as a beacon of architectural excellence, embodying the true spirit of a contemporary Indian, multi-generational family home.
