Designed by Arriva Designs this bungalow in Malabhar Hills, Mumbai, restored to its full glory is the meeting point of functional design and creative flair.

Located in the locality in Walkeshwar, Mumbai, this project required the restoration of an old heritage structure that had suffered wear and tear over the years, transforming it into a luxurious yet tasteful abode that reflected the client’s sophisticated taste and love for art. Designed by Aniruddha V. Nafrey, principal architect, Arriva, the project presented an opportunity to merge classical elegance with the serene beauty of nature. This careful balance ensured that the home’s history complemented the contemporary needs of the client, creating a space that feels both timeless and personal.

The client who is a passionate industrialist and a connoisseur of luxury and aesthetics had a deep appreciation for art and actively supports local artists. His lifestyle involves entertaining guests frequently, which called for dedicated spaces like a bar, home theatre, and outdoor entertainment zones. His openness to experimentation and two-decade-long relationship with the design team allowed for a highly personalized and art-integrated home. Further explaining the client brief, “The client wanted to restore an old heritage structure into a luxurious yet tasteful multi-storey bungalow that reflected his sophisticated taste, love for art, and appreciation for nature. The brief emphasized classical aesthetics, integration with natural surroundings, and high functionality across all spaces.”

The living area on the second floor was designed as a lavish entertainment zone, centered around a piano and complemented by imported furniture and rich marble flooring. It opens into a dining area overlooking greenery, making it a lively, interactive space. “Located adjacent to the living room, the dining area enjoys lush views of the surrounding landscape. Its placement encourages seamless indoor-outdoor interaction, ideal for social gatherings and family meals. A modern kitchen with state-of-the￾art amenities and a separate servant quarter was designed on the second floor to support daily functionality and service efficiency. It is located strategically near the dining and entertaining zones”, explains Aniruddha. The third floor houses two grand master bedrooms and two children’s rooms, all designed with luxury, comfort, and personalization in mind. Each room was curated with imported furnishings, customized lighting, and coordinated art to reflect the personality of the inhabitants.

The landscaping was integral to the design narrative. Existing trees were conserved, and additional greenery was introduced to create a resort-like atmosphere. Features such as a pool, mandir, waterfall, and a glasshouse with an outdoor bar counter enhanced the outdoor experience. The external walls were treated with unique art forms created by skilled artisans, adding layers of creativity and visual appeal.

The home was painted predominantly in white to amplify natural light and enhance the classical feel of the heritage structure. The white exterior contrasts beautifully with the lush greenery surrounding the property. Inside, a sophisticated and neutral palette was used to highlight textures, imported furniture, and curated artworks, while allowing lighting and art to create mood and visual interest. The material palette features rich, textured marble flooring for a luxurious underfoot experience, complemented by imported furniture pieces that add character and refinement. Aniruddha says, “Ceilings were intricately detailed, and artisan-crafted elements were introduced across walls and exterior surfaces. Materials were selected not just for their aesthetic value, but also for durability, comfort, and harmony with art and greenery.” “The entire home was thoughtfully illuminated with lighting tailored to suit the mood and function of each space. Accent lighting was used to highlight artworks and architectural elements, while ambient lighting enhanced comfort in bedrooms and lounges. The lighting design was influenced by the spatial purpose and the desired emotional tone — whether for relaxation, productivity, or social interaction”, he concludes.

The project with its meticulous design process, stands as a testament to the harmony of heritage restoration, modern luxury, and natural beauty.
